In order to successfully service 13 million passengers a year, the Calgary Airport is undergoing a major expansion with a new runway and supporting facilities. PCL/Parsons/Dufferin, a Joint Venture, is the construction manager acting as agent for the Airport Authority for the Runway Development Project (RDP). The RDP consists of a 4,270-meter (14,009-ft.) runway, with associated high-speed taxiways, a concrete apron around the new terminal, two underpasses, and a centralized deicing facility.

To meet the target completion date of May 2014, and to maintain the Airport Authority’s schedule, PCL crews are working twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. With nearly 500,000 cubic meters (17.7 million cu. ft.) of concrete paving, three new batch plants and new paving machines will be used. In addition, the two new underpasses will use 18,000 cubic meters (635,000 cu. ft.) of concrete. When complete, PCL will have installed 500 inset lights in the runway and over 700 kilometers (435 mi.) of electrical and communication cables.
