The Royal Park Temporary Bascule Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, was a fasttrack design-build project for the Florida Department of Transportation. This project called for the construction of a 1200-linear-foot bridge that included double leaf bascule spans. The proposed bridge design included pipe pile foundations with cast-in-place superstructure on the approach spans. The bascule piers were constructed using a structural steel space frame founded on 24-inch pipe piles. An innovative floating scheme was used to remove the existing bascule leaves and reinstall them into position on the temporary bridge structure.
The work was necessitated by the poor structural condition of the existing bridge. Under an emergency contract, the client selected PCL to design and construct the temporary bridge within 12 months. The team’s innovative design and construction schemes saved the client more than $6 million from the second bidder, and the project was successfully completed on time.
