Located in Orlando, Florida, this project included roadway widening, AASHTO beam bridge widening, and additional auxiliary lanes for existing and new toll facilities. The bridge widening consisted of both concrete- and steel-driven piles, as well as cast-in-place substructure and superstructure concrete. The 30-foot concrete piles reached lengths of up to 280 feet, and are the longest in Florida.
In addition to widening the roadway and bridge, the project team demolished an existing overpass and constructed a new steel tub girder overpass. Working closely with the client, PCL developed an innovative phasing solution to minimize traffic disruptions. A total of four separate night closures were permitted to perform this work, while phased construction eliminated traffic interruptions.
Prominent aesthetic features along the entire corridor include precast cladding, cast-in-place retaining walls, and a cable-stayed feature on the Lake Underhill Bridge structure. During construction, the project team proposed a value-engineering initiative to install a faux cable-stayed feature, thereby maintaining the aesthetic appearance of cable stays, but without the cost. By doing so, PCL provided the client with a better structure and lower maintenance costs.
