SR-60, Memorial Causeway Bridge Replacement

Project Overview

This project consisted of constructing twin cast-in-place concrete segmental bridges spanning the Clearwater Harbor. The new bridge, consisting of nine spans over 2,340 feet, replaced an existing bascule bridge that PCL demolished upon completion of the new structure. The new high-level bridge greatly reduced congestion for the traveling public by eliminating the frequent traffic interruptions that accompanied raising the bridge for boat traffic.

After the contract was awarded, PCL recognized an opportunity to improve the design and submitted a value-engineering change proposal (VECP) to the client. The VECP changed the bridge design, converting it to a design-build component and switching it from unit price to lump sum. This resulted in a guaranteed savings for the client.
