From September 6-7, 2023, PCL Construction brought together 128 scheduling champions for a companywide Planning, Scheduling and Lean (PSL) Conference at its North American Headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta.
PCL has a rich tradition of investing in its people, sharing knowledge and discovering new, better ways of doing things — and the PSL Conference is no exception. Centered on building the next generation of project schedulers, this year’s conference focused on fueling innovation and improving processes across the company.
“Participating in the PSL Conference significantly enhanced my technical expertise and interpersonal skills. I'm grateful for PCL's dedication to organizing events that bring us together, facilitate knowledge sharing, and strengthen our professional relationships.” — Liz LaHaye, planning and scheduling coordinator
The expertly curated curriculum spanned two days and included 27 technical presentations, four keynotes and three panel discussions, as well as vendor demonstrations and in-house experts on the technologies used at PCL every day. Highlights of the content include:
- Applying advanced scheduling techniques and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, like Building Information Modeling (BIM) using augmented and virtual reality. This combines architecture, engineering and construction with the world of gaming to transcend the way we build models and create 4D and 5D construction schedules.
- Elevating operational excellence through process scheduling enhancements and implementing Lean methodologies. By meticulously evaluating each step of manufacturing production, these enhancements and methodologies ensure optimal input and output efficiency and overall profitability.
- Unlocking the benefits of sophisticated equipment and material procurement strategies, seamlessly navigating extended lead times and cultivating a robust procurement life cycle for enhanced project management effectiveness.
This internal conference highlights just a few of the boundless opportunities PCL employees can expect: learning from industry leaders, honing their skills and shaping their own careers. It allows employees to gain experience from the best in the business and make their mark on diverse and essential projects in the communities where they live and work.
