Planet Hollywood, a renowned dining destination located at Disney Springs, underwent a significant transformation into an entirely new experience for guests, re-emerging as the Planet Hollywood Observatory. This renovation introduced a four-story stargazing observatory theme, complete with an outdoor terrace and lounge, offering guests a refreshed and immersive dining experience.

As the general contractor for this ambitious project, PCL played a pivotal role in bringing the reimagined Planet Hollywood to life. The scope of work encompassed a comprehensive interior renovation, which involved stripping the existing design and installing new finishes and millwork to align with the observatory theme. Additionally, PCL constructed a brand-new main entrance, aptly named ‘The Observatory,’ along with retail and office spaces, office spaces, and a 1,700-square-foot quick service restaurant shell space.

A notable aspect of the renovation was the upgrade to the building's exterior. Originally, a foam exterior was planned for the roof; however, it did not meet the required aesthetic standards. Drawing from experience with a similar project at ZooMiami, PCL proposed an alternative solution—a PTFE membrane roofing system. Collaborating directly with Birdair, PCL modified an existing product, resulting in significant cost savings and reducing the project timeline by eight weeks. This innovative roofing system not only achieved the desired aesthetic but also ensured a watertight enclosure. The new roofing was supported by a structural steel framing system, seamlessly integrated with the existing structural trusses of the dome. The PTFE membrane was then stretched over the new framing, creating a distinctive paneled appearance that complemented the observatory theme envisioned in the design.

The revitalized Planet Hollywood Observatory offers guests at Disney Springs a unique and memorable dining experience overlooking the iconic spring.
