YYC Calgary International Airport's Trail Tunnel is a cast-in-place tunnel structure designed for six lanes of traffic and two LRT lanes. It connects Barlow Trail to 36 Street under YYC's parallel runway and taxiways.
The airport tunnel project provides a model for how construction management delivery can create value for a client. Design began in April 2011 and construction of the tunnel structure under the airfield was completed in October 2012. This aggressive schedule arose from the need to complete the tunnel and backfill around it without affecting the overall schedule for runway development.
The project team overcame schedule challenges, including an impact of five and half months caused by soil conditions, as well as one of six months resulting from the electrical scope of work. The team’s mitigation efforts were successful, and we met the milestones for handing over backfilled portions of the tunnel to the Airport Authority.
