The Cascade Power Plant, located five kilometres west of Edson, Alberta, was a complete EPC design/build/commission and start-up project. The plant consists of a 900 MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant with two parallel lines of 450 MW. Each train consists of a single shaft configuration: a Siemens gas-fired combustion turbine, generator, and steam turbine fed by a Siemens NEM Fast HRSG. The power plant is now powering one million Alberta homes.
PCL's scope of work included all construction activities including:
- greenfield earthworks
- underground piping
- piles and concrete foundations
- structural steel erection
- carbon steel and specialty alloy piping
- mechanical equipment setting
- station power and generated electrical power distribution
- instrumentation and process control systems
- electrical and communications cabling
- high-voltage switchyard construction
We design/built the combined administration offices, central control room, maintenance shop with stores and the water treatment plant with storage tank farm. PCL also provided craft support to our joint venture partner's commissioning and start-up specialists for the plant start-up. PCL executed 85% of the project scope with our direct hire forces.
