PCL played a significant role in Syncrude's Upgrader Expansion project, which increased Syncrude's production to approximately 350,000 barrels per day. PCL projects for this expansion included construction of the following: world-scale hydrogen plant (Plant 9-4); demolition, foundations, area paving, and ISBL underground piping ; aromatic saturation unit; general mechanical and electrical (Plant 18-2); OSBL general mechanical (Plant 20/21); expansion completion, commissioning, and start-up work; OSBL and ISBL module assembly; and multiple base plant modifications.

During construction, the project team’s performance so impressed the client that all forthcoming commissioning and completion work was awarded to PCL. Shortly after completion, PCL was awarded the Syncrude President’s Award for Contractor Excellence in Environmental, Health, and Safety.
