The McCarthy Hall renovation project is an interior remodel of the existing academic building on the Valley City State University campus. The construction scope includes the demolition of interior walls and the installation of new mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems throughout the building. Additionally, the exterior envelope will undergo essential maintenance, and a new atrium is being constructed. Upon project completion in the summer of 2025, McCarthy Hall will house the university’s School of Education. The new atrium will serve as a grand entrance, connecting McCarthy Hall to McFarland Hall, another academic and administrative building on campus.
The team on the McCarthy Hall project has been presented with several challenges, including its location on an active campus and the need to connect McCarthy Hall to the occupied McFarland Hall. Additionally, the age of the buildings – McCarthy Hall was originally constructed in the 1930s and McFarland Hall in the 1800s – has required careful consideration of structural features and historical elements. Despite access to substantial building plans, unexpected conditions have arisen during demolition, necessitating quick pivots and close coordination with architects and structural engineers. The PCL team excels in retrofits and renovations, particularly in older buildings, thanks to a culture of continuous engagement with the client and design team.
The renovation of McCarthy Hall will greatly benefit the students and faculty who use the building. This school construction project will refresh the facility and provide additional square footage, allowing for better utilization of space and enhancing the overall educational environment.
