Inspired by a job application he found tacked to a wall at the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering – which still hangs in his office – Mauricio Ramos applied for an internship at PCL Construction in 2003. More than two decades later, he has been instrumental in driving the company's success in the United States.
Ramos’s journey in the construction industry began long before his time at PCL. Growing up in Mexico, he was surrounded by construction, as his family was in the construction industry. This early exposure ignited his passion, leading him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Arizona and later a Master of Business Administration from the University of Montreal.
“I’ve always had a deep appreciation for building,” says Ramos. “I love seeing something take shape from the ground up.”
While the first part of his career was largely spent in the civil sector overseeing water infrastructure projects in Arizona, Colorado, Florida and New Mexico, today Ramos serves as vice president and district manager out of PCL’s Denver office. In this role, he oversees business operations in the area and ensures that projects are executed safely and successfully. His leadership is centered around fostering strong relationships – with clients, architects, subcontractors and internal teams – to drive long-term success and repeat business.
“My role is to foster success in this market, and to me, success is built on strong relationships,” says Ramos. “We want to build trust, solve challenges together, and create an environment where everyone – our project teams and external stakeholders – can excel.”
During his tenure at PCL, Ramos has been part of numerous impactful projects, each providing unique challenges and learning experiences. "I've worked on many projects, but the ones that stand out most are those where we had a strong team and were creating something with a lasting, positive impact on the community,” says Ramos. He attributes the success of projects like the 16th Street Mall revitalization project in Denver and the Northwater Treatment Plant project in Golden, both of which he played a role in overseeing, to the teamwork and collaboration involved.
When asked why he has remained with PCL for over two decades, Ramos attributes the company’s culture of respect, trust and honesty. He believes that PCL’s commitment to its people and clients sets it apart. “We are employee-owned, which means our people take real ownership of their work. Our teams collaborate to proactively solve challenges and align with our clients to build success together.”
Beyond his work at PCL, Ramos is involved in community organizations like the ACE Mentor Program, a program that connects students with professionals from the design and construction industries, inspiring them to pursue careers in these fields. He also serves on the board of the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation, a regional economic development group in the U.S. that unites the nine counties of Metro Denver and Northern Colorado to promote and support the growth of local businesses and attract new businesses to the area.
Since joining the Denver office, Ramos has also engaged with Mile High United Way and the Colorado chapter of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, both organizations that PCL proudly supports.
