YUMA, Ariz. (Nov. 8, 2024) – PCL Construction, Inc. broke ground on the Desert Dunes Water Reclamation Facility, a $100 million critical expansion that will double the facility’s capacity, ensuring that Yuma's water infrastructure keeps pace with the city’s rapid growth. The event marks the beginning of a major project that will increase wastewater treatment from 3.3 million gallons per day to 6.6 million gallons per day.
The groundbreaking ceremony featured remarks from city officials and representatives from PCL, along with facility tours.
“A lot has changed in the 20 years since PCL served as the contractor for the original Desert Dunes Water Reclamation Facility in 2003, and we’re excited to bring new innovations and solutions such as a new ultraviolet disinfection system and additional filters to this project,” said John Rodriguez, PCL project manager. “Our knowledge of the original design ensures a smooth construction process as we double the plant’s capacity, providing Yuma with reliable infrastructure to support future growth.”
The expansion project is a response to increased domestic and industrial wastewater demands driven by Yuma’s steady growth. The original facility was master-planned with future expansion in mind, demonstrating the city's foresight in preparing for ongoing development. The upgrade will ensure Yuma can continue to support both residential and industrial growth without interruption.
“We are excited to mark the milestone of upgrading the Desert Dunes Wastewater Treatment Facility,” said Director of Utilities Jeremy McCall. “This is the result of the city’s foresight nearly 20 years ago to make this a master planned facility, and of continued growth and investments in our community. Once complete, Desert Dunes will ensure future development goes on without interruption, and will continue to support economic growth in Yuma.”
The facility, designed for flexibility and future scalability, will continue to serve as a key element in Yuma’s water management system, supporting the city's economic and residential expansion for years to come.
