The steel vertical-lift bridge in North Carolina carries U.S. 17, U.S. 76 and U.S. 421 across the Cape Fear River between Brunswick County and New Hanover County. The lift span can be raised 135 feet to accommodate ship and vessel traffic underneath the bridge. The rehabilitation of the 50-year-old bridge included structural and mechanical repairs along with painting the bridge superstructure and renovating the bridge control house. It was imperative to the client that the bridge remain operable throughout construction since it was the primary route into the city and Port of Wilmington. For PCL’s Special Projects division, this meant that they had to conduct the majority of work during off-shift hours as to not disrupt the bridge’s operations during the day. Using a solution provider mentality and an ownership mindset, the team was able to complete the bridge on time, allowing the city to enjoy the rehabilitated route to and from the city.
