Rising to the Challenge

With more than 60,000 solar photovoltaic modules, the 19.8-megawatt direct current (DC) utility scale Pendleton Solar Energy Centre is one of the largest single-axis tracker systems in the province of Ontario. Material delays, long nights and harsh winter weather did not stop our team from reaching this large-scale facility’s commercial operation date.

Community Contribution

The facility has contributed to the community beyond providing a clean source of energy. During construction, there were important opportunities for the local and surrounding economy through the procurement of local services, contractors and materials for project construction. At the peak of construction, there were more than 150 construction jobs to fill.

EDF Renewables set up a Community Benefit Agreement to contribute to the community an estimated $500,000, and an estimated $400,000 of additional property tax revenue will help supplement revenues for the township, counties and local school board – both over the 20-year life of the project.

The Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation make up more than half of the facility’s ownership.
