Spurred on by hometown hockey pride, PCL transformed a defunct rail-yard-turned-parking-lot into the new home of the National Hockey League’s Edmonton Oilers. The opening of Rogers Place ushered in a new era for hockey fans in the city. Visitors are greeted by amazing sightlines, wide concourses, leading food and beverage offerings and the latest in technology – including the largest true-high-definition center-ice scoreboard in the NHL. 

Rogers Place and its related infrastructure boast 1.1 million square feet of space, the largest true high-definition scoreboard in the NHL, and expansive concourses with natural light. Rogers Place anchors a major revitalization of Edmonton’s downtown and has spurred $5 billion in private and public developments, including ICE District, which will be Canada’s largest sports and entertainment area. The project scope included construction of Ford Hall, the Downtown Community Arena, LRT connection and pedestrian pedway.

Rogers Place is the first Canadian LEED® Silver certified NHL facility. Measures incorporated to obtain the LEED® credits include having one ice plant for both rinks, 12 electric car charging stations and 14% reduced energy consumption from motion-activated LED lights. Approximately 30% of materials used in construction were from recycled (or contained recycled) content, low-flush toilets and efficient fixtures have resulted in 37% less water use, 83% of wood products used in construction were from certified sources and 89% of construction debris was diverted from landfills. Rogers Place also qualified for LEED points based on its location in Edmonton’s downtown core, a location that increases density, encourages walkability, reduces infrastructure needs and optimizes the use of the city’s public transit system.

The 141-foot-tall arena holds more than 18,000 fans for hockey games and can seat up to 20,000 concert-goers. Rogers Place offers guests the latest in technology, with over 1,250 HD TVs located throughout and free access to Wi-Fi in all clubs, concourses and the seating bowl.

Rogers Place is a transformative, world-class entertainment venue that outmatches all other facilities of its kind. From the start of construction, it was imperative the building be ready for the start of the 2016/17 NHL and WHL hockey seasons. The project team met this goal by delivering the 1.1-million-square-foot facility in 30 months with every worker returning home safe at the end of every day.
