The Ryerson Centre for Urban Innovation (CUI) transformed a heritage landmark into a groundbreaking and state-of-the-art university research facility.

The CUI integrates the existing heritage façade into the construction of two new, interconnected buildings purpose-built to accommodate zones dedicated to wet and dry lab research as well as research fabrication, incubation and commercialization.

The 65,000 square-foot space supports innovators focused on alternative energy, water management, food production, body metrics and human health solutions. State-of-the-art energy and water use systems provide a living laboratory for student researchers.

This project was made possible through the provincial Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) program.  PCL was instrumental in supporting Ryerson through a successful SIF proposal process to secure project funding. Adhering to non-negotiable progress milestones was critical to maintaining the flow of funds to the project. Engaging advanced pull planning and fast-track methods, PCL successfully achieved all critical dates in order to protect funding for Ryerson, this despite the complex heritage renewal scope involved.

A crucial element of this innovation hub was protection of the existing historical elements. We used vibration detection and monitoring technology to ensure levels were kept at acceptable rates. As the neighboring buildings were also historic, we monitored and mitigated construction impacts due to the tightly spaced location of the site. We kept in constant communication with the residents in the area by conducting monthly meetings to build trust, openly address concerns and inform on future operations that could cause inconvenience.
