STAPLES Center is the home of the Kings NHL hockey team, the Lakers and Clippers NBA basketball teams and the WNBA’s Sparks women’s professional basketball team. The NBA basketball and hockey teams play in overlapping schedules, making it the first venue in history to host three simultaneous professional sports seasons.
In total, the 960,000-square-foot building hosts more than 250 events annually, utilizing its team offices for the Kings and Lakers, extensive broadcast production facilities, three restaurants, a private club (including outdoor terrace dining), a team merchandise store, separate home locker rooms for each tenant, visitor locker rooms for each sport, large media workrooms, 160 private suites, eight party suites, large-capacity catering kitchen, concession facilities and a cigar lounge.
The center was originally planned to take 24-months to complete, however we were able to reduce construction to just 18 months. In order to meet the challenges of the complicated geometry, evolving design and an aggressive construction schedule, we selected a composite precast/cast-in-place structural system. This system allowed us to utilize large simultaneous concrete operations both onsite and offsite.
In addition, we worked with a structural engineer to find a design to meet stringent Southern California seismic requirements.
