Located approximately 10km north of the historic mining town of Gulgong, in the Mid-Western Regional Local Council Area in NSW, ACEN Australia’s Stubbo Solar project will use more than 930,000 photovoltaic panels to covert sunrays into 400 megawatts of clean energy, enough to power 185,000 average Australian homes.
PCL has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the construction of this solar project. Construction works began in 2023 and the project is expected to be operational by 2025. This project has development approval for a 200 MWh battery energy storage system that, in the future, will allow it to be adapted to dispatch energy during peak hours and provide critical grid stability services.
Benefits for the Community and Environment
- The flat, grazing land for Stubbo Solar is in the Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone and will be home to sheep and grazing animals as well as the solar arrays. The rows of photovoltaic panels will have enough height and space for the sheep to graze in and around the panels and will also provide welcome shade and protection from the hot summer sun for the grazing animals.
- Construction has commenced on the project and is expected to create up to 400 jobs during construction and up to 10 ongoing jobs, generating many contracting opportunities for local businesses. Contractors and service providers are encouraged to express interest to PCL Construction at STSPCommunity@pcl.com. To maximize the benefits for the local community, workers and businesses from the local and regional areas will be prioritized.
- Stubbo Solar will help Australia transition to net zero carbon emissions, delivering low-cost renewable energy and jobs for the Central-West Orana region of New South Wales.
